PWA Superstar of the Month: Brett Idol

Anyone can attest to the fact that it's hard to find a hidden treasure, but what do you do when it walks right through the door? That was the case when a young kid with all the making to be a pro-wrestling superstar first joined Booker T's Pro Wrestling Academy. That talent's name is none other than Brett Idol, and he plans on you remembering that name for a very long time.

Brett Idol joined the PWA and immediately caught the attention of the 6-Time World Heavyweight Champion, Booker T. "You could tell that this kid was a Blue Chipper. He has all the tools you need to build a champion, great work ethic, and a deire to be the best." said Booker T. While he is very extroverted around and inside the wrestling ring, Brett was humbled when he heard those words from his mentor and trainer. "I think that's great. I respect Booker T, and I've learned so much from him while at the school". Despite his popularity with the fans, Idol is still a mystery of sorts, so here now is the background on the former PWA Champion.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Idol was the perennial high school athlete. Excelling in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track, there was no shortage of college scholarships coming his way. "I accepted a full ride athletic scholarship to TCU, but my heart was in other places" said Idol. Having done some department store modeling on the side while in high school, a rep from an ad agency encouraged Brett to see what Hollywood had to offer. "that was an experience that I will never forget. I had to grow up pretty quick." Idol made the most of the opportunity that was presented to him, and learned what it takes to please a crowd. "I went through each day as if the camera was on me 24/7. I learned to project an image of self-confidence that has translated over to the wrestling ring." Needless to say Hollywood would only be a stepping stone to Brett's true love, the world of Professional Wrestling. Growing up in the Dallas, TX area, Brett idolized (no pun intended) the legendary Von Erich wrestling family. "I was a big fan and I remember when Kerry Von Erich won the NWA Title at Texas Stadium. I was just a little kid, but that was when I knew that I wanted to become a pro wrestler." Brett started to train in earnest and worked with a few wrestling companies, doing extremely well for himself, and then he heard about Booker T's PWA. "I couldn't believe that it was for real. You have a guy in Booker T that has done it all in the wrestling world, how can you not learn from him?" Idol joined the PWA under the pseudonym of "Richey Rich", and found marginal success. It was later that Idol made a career change for the better. "That was a time when I was still very cocky and arrogant. I did what I wanted to do both inside and outside of the ring, without thinking of the repercussions. I was trying to make it in the business on looks alone and it wasn't working. I knew that I had the skills and the heart to do better." Idol then began wrestling under his own name, and success was just a three-count away.

Brett realized his childhood dream and captured his own piece of wrestling gold as he defeated fellow superstar NEICO to become a PWA Champion. Their fued was one of mutual respect and tenacity and is still regarded as one of the most competitive in the history of the PWA. "I think that I grew a lot during my battles with NEICO, we are both very competitive and we brought the best out of each other. It (the fued) took me to a championship level, no doubt." Even though he lost the PWA title awhile later, Idol refused to fall by the wayside. Bret regrouped and was recently offered the chance of a lifetime. "I got a call from the promoters of Nu-Wrestling Evolution, a wrestling company based in Europe. Booker T gave Idol a ringing endorsement and in a matter of weeks Brett found himself wrestling overseas in Spain! "I couldn't believe what had happened, I'm sitting in a hotel room in Barcelona, Spain just thinking how far I had come, and realizing that my hard work and sacrifices were paying off". Idol wowed the sellout crowds during the overseas tour, and has already been asked to come back for the second leg of a summer tour.

It seems like the sky is the limit for this young lion. With a PWA championship on his résumé, an overseas tour under his belt, and an ever increasing fan base, what more can a guy ask for?

We asked Brett what he attributed his success to. Brett answered, "I owe much of my success to Booker T. and the PWA for giving me the opportunity to do what I love, and that is entertaining the fans, and becoming a champion!" Thanks again to Brett Idol, the PWA Superstar of the Month!
